I'm thrilled to be bringing in an expert on the dancing of the Ghawazee (althernate spelling Ghawazi) of Egypt. These traditional street performers of Egypt fascinated westerners for more than a century. Originally, ghawazees were street performers who danced all over Egypt. Edward Lane noted in his 1836 classic Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians that Egypt was celebrated for its public dancing girls, and that the ghawazee were the most famous of them. He mentions their “rapid vibrating motion of the hips from side to side” and, like many observers before and since then, speculated on their origins. Lane calls them “a distinct tribe”; many people believe that they are actually a tribe of Gypsies who migrated to Egypt long ago and settled there. When the public dancing girls were banned from Cairo in the mid-1800’s, many of the ghawazee dancers ended up in Upper Egypt, in the Luxor area. The most famous of the dancers were those of the Maazin family, called Banat Maazin (“daughters of Maazin”). The males of the family form the band that plays for the dancers, and the whole family is supported by the income from these performances.

Habiba has studied personally with Kairiyya Maazin and is eager to pass on what she has learned. Here's what she will be covering:
-instruction in Ghawazi technique
-costume demonstration,
-Ghawazi staging and working together in pairs
-complete choreography
-lecture on history of Ghawazi

Roberto Presents: Faten in Philadelphia!

  • Headlong Dance Theater

https://www.facebook.com/events/350866885296867/

Roberto Mejía presents Faten of Egypt/D.C. for a day of fabulous workshops!

About Faten: Master Egyptian instructor and choreographer, Faten, began dancing in Cairo at age 11 when she was selected to attend a dance school for children run by Egypt's first-ever National Folkloric Troupe (“Kowmeya”). While dancing full time and performing for heads of state, ambassadors, and royalty across the globe, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in French Literature. With her husband, Shawki Naim, at the time the top soloist in Egypt and the National Troupe choreographer, they created their own troupe, which traveled and performed around the world, while continuing to serve as members of the National Folkloric Troupe of Egypt. Now based in Arlington, Virginia, Faten teaches weekly classes at Saffron Dance School and is highly sought-after to teach Egyptian dance workshops worldwide. Faten continuously expresses her love of Egyptian dance, the folklore and music through the choreographies she creates and performed by her dedicated students. Faten is the director of two dance companies at Saffron Dance and her original group, Al Massraweya. After dancing with Faten, you will be hooked on her joyful style and her enthusiasm.

Workshop Prices: Enjoy the early bird special of $50 for one class or $85 for both before March 13th! After March 13th the prices will go up to $65 for one or $120 for both. If registering before the day of the workshops, please send PayPal payments to Roberto at rsmejia@verizon.net. If PayPal is not an option please email Roberto for additional payment options. Cash and checks will be accepted the day of. All sales are final unless Roberto must cancel the workshops!

Workshops:

12:30-2:30pm

********* ORIENTAL TECHNIQUE A LA FATEN *************
In class with Faten, you will move, sweat, smile and have fun while learning the origins of Egyptian folkloric dance, its influence and connection to modern belly dance. You will learn important Egyptian dance concepts, footwork, technique and feeling. Studying with Faten will enrich your dancing in a beautiful and authentic way no matter what style you normally perform: from folklore to oriental to tribal and beyond!

In "Oriental Technique ala Faten" class, Faten will teach oriental Egyptian dance technique using many classical songs from the legendary Egyptian singer Oum Kalthoum.

2:30 - 3pm BROWN BAG LUNCH

3 - 5pm

********** SAIDI TECHNIQUE & CHOREOGRAPHY *************
Raqs al Assaya, the Egyptian women’s stick dance of Upper Egypt, is said to have developed as an imitation of tahtib, the men’s martial arts dance, but with a feminine touch. Tahtib is a traditional style of stick fighting and dance from the Middle East. Common instruments used in the Saidi style music are the mizmar, nay, rababa, and tabla.
Learn Saidi steps, combinations, feeling and technique from a recent Faten choreography to the song "Ana Min Saidi" from Mohamed Shahin's Ahlam CD. Bring a cane.

Workshops will be held at the Headlong Dance Theater at South Broad and Federal in South Philly. Street parking is plentiful on weekends and public transportation is a hop, skip, and a jump away! Please do not bring street shoes into the studio as the floors are not meant for them.

Questions? Comments? Concerns? Please do not hesitate to contact Roberto at rsmejia@verizon.net !!

See you in May!

Friday, March 31. 8-10:30pm
Samira, with training in makeup and years in front of the camera, and on stage, will teach you multiple techniques to make the best of your features, and help you look fantastic in front of the camera.
Come wearing your regular foundation. Bring your own makeup, brushes and a mirror.
We will go step by step with Samira demonstrating each process on a different individual, and then everyone following along on themselves. We will cover contouring, highlighting, make up for all different parts of the face, what different finishes and formulas are for, and special techniques for different ages.
If you have specific questions you’d like to address in the workshop, email Samira beforehand. $50

Saturday, April 1, 9:30-10:30am

How do you get those magical photos of your dance? What kinds of photos are most useful in marketing? We’ll help you figure out your needs.
We will go over body, face, expression, lighting and then some, in this photo shoot prep workshop. Learn details of how to strike those glamour poses so they flatter your figure. Develop ways to move between poses, so you appear to be dancing, and the photographer will have the opportunity to capture just the perfect angle on you.
Samira will teach you facial relaxation techniques to keep you looking natural and at ease, and also expression tips, so you look “real.”
After this workshop, you will know how to use your hands, your lighting, your space and more. $20

Photo Shoot Coach!
Saturday, April 1, time TBD
This is an add-on item. Only available with purchase of both workshops. See below.
Want Samira to help you with your shoot?
She’ll help guide you during your shoot with lighting, movement and feeling super comfortable. Samira will also help with details such as hair and straps in place, keeping the shadows out of your face and more. Workshops with Karma Karmelita

  • MAC Harbor East

Karma is an award winning bellydancer and mermaid! She will be teaching three workshops in Baltimore to help you unleash the beast, work on your spins and turns, and bring out your inner mermaid!

Visit http://marizadance.com/workshops for more info and to register.

Unleash the Beast
11:30am - 1:30pm
Summon your inner Amazon and learn intense and dynamic combinations and technique stylization to punch your audience in the face! (Metaphorically, of course). Foot stomps, tight spins, hair-o-graphy, and powerful movements come together to form unique combinations that students can use in their own shows. Not for the faint of heart, this workshop will challenge students both physically and creatively! RAWR!

Spins, Turns, Stops, and Drops
2pm - 4pm
Learn techniques to perfect all of them! Students will learn turns and spins of all kinds—varying in speed, width, level changes, and arm patterns. Stop on a dime and pause to the music to bring your performance to a deeper level. We will also go over unique and powerful ways to descend to the ground as either a transition for floorwork or a fantastic finishing move.

The Mermaid Concept: Liquefied Motion
4:45pm - 6:45pm
As a professional mermaid, I have gained extensive knowledge and experience in working in the water. This has given me a unique perspective on three dimensional movement when on the stage. This course is approximately 2 hours long and teaches part of a breath-taking choreography. Don’t be fooled by the name! While it sounds slow and fluid, you will work up a sweat, so plan accordingly!

We're heating up the cold winter weather with a great show! Performing for us will be Ghadir, Isabel Asra, Odalys, and headliner Samira Shuruk.

As usual, this event will be set to live music by the Fez Tones, your hometown hafla band. The second part of the show will feature music for open dancing, so bring your hip scarf!

The New Deal Cafe is a great space, with a welcoming and supportive environment. There's plenty of free parking, too. Be sure to call for reservations, (301) 474-5642.

There is never a cover charge or minimum food order for this event. But please find it in your hearts to generously tip our wonderful musicians and our headliner! If you're short on cash, Latifa can take a charge card. Suggested tip: $10 per person.
